Usually one company in every Japanese tank regiment was a light tank company armed with Type 95 Ha-Go light tanks. The light tank companies were not intended to fight enemy tanks and their primary role was to support the infantry. The Type 95 Ha-Go was, by the standards of the mid 1930’s, an excellent light tank. Using the Type 89’s diesel engine in a much lighter tank afforded the vehicle far greater performance than its older cousin.
As with its larger cousin, the Type 95 served well in the opening months of the war in the Pacific, engaging the American Provisional Tank Group’s M3 Stuarts in the first tank on tank combat of the Pacific War. As a light tank, the Type 95’s role changed the least during the war, as it was never meant to engage medium tanks head on.
